So many things crowd God out of my life. How much of my time does God want?
God does not want to be just another addition to your life--he wants everything you do to revolve around him!
Check this out: Bike tires are only as strong as the hub of the wheel. If a tire was made up only of rim and spokes, the wheel would soon collapse under the constant pounding and pressure.
The spokes in our lives are those things that are important to us: family, friends, school, sports, entertainment, etc. If life revolves around any one of these 'spokes,' eventually the constant pounding and pressures of our world will wear us down and possibly cause us to collapse! But God is a hub that can keep life together.
The people of Israel chose to reject God 'the hub' of their lives by demanding a king to rule over them. What they were actually saying was, 'God, since we can't see you, we can't trust you to take care of us. Give us someone we can see who will rule over us.' Eventually God gave in to their request. (See 1 Sam 8:7.) The results, however, were devastating. The Old Testament graphically describes what happened when God's people rejected him as their leader.
When things begin to crowd out your relationship with God, try writing down a list of your priorities. Ask a trusted Christian friend if he or she thinks any one of these 'spokes' is taking the place of God in your life.
